The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
