EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
