The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
