A defence minister has confirmed that the MoD is actively investigating the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been advised to avoid talking about classified matters in any cars.
Safety Advice for MoD Personnel
In a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He said that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that safety is a issue in all contemporary cars.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
