RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
