People who experienced sexual abuse by church officials have expressed fresh optimism following their first meeting with the new Pope at the Vatican.

The board president, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so early in his leadership spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the issue.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Approach Advocated

The group is advocating for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any clergy member who confesses to or is found guilty of abusing a child. This approach has been implemented in the United States.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "opposition in some parts of the world" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is pushback," they remarked.

Inherited Issue

The current pontiff, who took the position in May, has taken on this longstanding problem that has plagued the Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to address the situation included an historic summit on child abuse within the Church and revisions to church laws to explicitly criminalize sexual abuse.

Personal Connection

For the representative, who uses they/them pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the policy is deeply meaningful. The North American advocate revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was subsequently moved between different parishes.

"We trust this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to work with him," they stated. "Both sides share the same goal, we seek to end clergy abuse."

Historic Encounter

Seven representatives of the coalition, which includes victims and advocates from over thirty nations, met with the Pope in his official residence.

The discussion, originally scheduled for 20 minutes, lasted to a full hour, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was characterized as "very understanding" when listening to the story of a woman abused at a Catholic residential school for native youth in North America.

Hickey added the leader was "tender" about their own experience and seemed "modest, funny, and approachable."

"Survivors have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was genuine, realistic, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is hoping that changes to church regulations will facilitate the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have spoken with experts and gathered materials that they will present to the pontiff.

"He seemed interested in reviewing it," they remarked.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent church-ordered report highlighted the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or dismissal of religious officials or staff in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for church leaders and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they told the Pope at the start of their discussion: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, they expressed optimism for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, uniting and building a relationship and persisting to build that relationship is a step in the right direction," they commented.

They concluded that they shared with the pontiff: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can change how the narrative concludes - he valued that."
