Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
